Lord Krishna is introduced to us early on, as a cousin of the Pandavas. He is accomplished, wise, and powerful in his own right (unlike Pandavas or Kauravas at this point, who are squabbling children). This is because he has overthrown Kamsa, the King of Surasena kingdom, native land of the Yadavas. However, he has multiple problems of his own. Firstly, he is a cowherd, not royalty. The Yadavas rule by council, not by king. Thus, even though Krishna is the leader of the Yadavas, he is not equal to royalty. Further, Kamsa was Jarasandh's Senapati. Jarasandh is the emperor of India. Every other dynasty, including the Kurus, pays obeisance to him. This doesn't leave Krishna with very many allies. That Krishna is capable and a political genius (at such a young age) is evident because Jarasandh has been unable to crush him outright. But Krishna has now fought 18 wars with Jarasandh, and has slowly lost territory to him. He has been forced to leave his land and move to the island of Dwarka. He needs help.
Guess who else need help? The Pandavas. They are staking a claim to the throne of Hastinapur on extremely untenable grounds: It is an open secret that Pandu was impotent. Who then, are these children, arrived from nowhere? Here is Krishna's opportunity. The Pandavas will oppose Duryodhana, who is Dhritarashtra's son. Dhritarashtra is politically aligned with Jarasandh. Thus, Pandavas are going against Jarasandh himself. Krishna aligns himself with the Pandavas.

God Krishna is found in the Harivamsa, the Bhagavad Gita, the Bhagavada Purana, the Vishnu Purana, and other minor texts. As a reoccurring character, he gets a lot of page-time. But not only is he mentioned a lot, he also gets all the good roles.
Bhagwan Krishna's popularity is due in part to the many ideas he represents. One moment he is an adorable infant prince and the next he is a lewdly suggestive prankster. He is a model lover and adamant playboy, yet also a hero of the highest order. Oh, and also being a Supreme Being helps. He is the consummate man of all seasons.
But eventually the Gita says whatever he does is perfection and one cannot question the why or what. And there follows the famous quote of Gita where it is said that whatever has happened, will happen and going to happen is for the good, because of the vastness of the creation and the concepts of illusory world kicking in.

Baby Krishna encourages the fielding of Sikhandin as a front , while the rules of Dharmayuddha forbid a man from fighting against a woman. Krishna egged Bhima on to strike Duryodhana in the forbidden nether regions, as that was the part where Duryodhana was vincible, thus enabling Bhima to deliver a mortal blow to Duryodhana. Infact, Krishna's own brother Balarama was so enraged by this that he set out to kill Bhima with his weapon, the Hala.
Krishna encouraged Yudhishtira to lie, to say Ashwatthama was dead, to mentally unsettle Drona. Krishna encouraged a hesitant Arjuna to slay the chariot-less and unarmed Karna while he was trying to lift his accursed chariot from the earth.
Wrongly" aiding one combatant in a hand to hand combat between two equals, when he signals that Bhima should throw the two halves of Jarasandha on either side such that they cannot fuse back again.
Conclusion
The stories of his life are absolutely epic. He was born through telepathic insemination, suckled a villainous ogress to death, slew demons for fun as a youth, fooled around with milkmaids, proved a brilliant military strategist for Arjuna, had 16,108 "wives", many sons, and died nobly while in reclusive meditation. Really, what's not to like? His life lives on in some of India's most famous poems, plays, and songs.
I am sure—and I certainly hope—that more people keep adding to this. It is an interesting question that can be approached from many different perspectives. I have not even touched on his historical originations or portrayal in other religions (Jainism, Buddhism, Bahá'í).
